Flat Lick Falls
Update
April 22, 2008
![]()
When I first added the picture of the Flat Lick Falls to this website, that property was privately owned. Since that time, the ownership of the falls property has changed. This property is located near Gray Hawk, Kentucky and is now owned by Jackson County.
According to information in local newspapers and by word of mouth I have learned that the county of Jackson, the county in which the Flat Lick Falls is located, has purchased the Falls and the surrounding area. According to the article in the February 13, 2008 edition of The Jackson County Times the tract of land that was purchased for the Flat Lick Falls project is 86 acres in size. There now are plans for developing this area.
According to an April 24, 2008 article in The Jackson County Sun, the county doesn't yet have the money for this development. So all work presently being done is by volunteers. However, several grants have been submitted but, not received. See link below for a picture of the volunteers and the article.
I just found an article today,
May 29, 2008, from the February 13, 2008 edition of the Jackson County Times,
concerning the Flat Lick Falls project. I'll put a link to that article toward
the bottom of the page, along with the article from the Jackson County Sun.
At present, I know of no timeline or target date for the start or completion of
any extensive development.
If anyone is interested in contacting any of Jackson County's elected officials for further information, you will find a link for that at the bottom of this page. The city of McKee, KY is the county seat of Jackson County.
Below, you will find links to two separate groups of pictures of the falls and the surrounding area. I took the first group in January of 1999 and the second group on May 24, 2008.
The Flat Lick Falls is on Flat
Lick Creek and the location of the falls is at coordinates:
N37° 22'.248" x W83°

On the Tyner, KY Quadrangle of
the USGS, 7.5 minute series Topo map the location is:
.762 inches south of coordinate line 37° 22' 30"
2.648 inches east of coordinate line 83° 57' 30"
Flat Lick Creek and Laurel Fork run together, at coordinates N37° 22'.119" x W83° 56'.506", about 300 yards below the falls. And, there's an old cabin site located approximately 200 yards below the falls..
